When Did Man and Dog First Form Their Partnership?

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Jonathan Franklin, author of “The Wolf in the Parlor,” has re-written the narrative about the long-time relationship between Man and Dog.  Conventional wisdom has Man domesticating the Dog somewhere around 6,000 years ago.  But Jon Franklin, through extensive research, has shown that Man didn’t really “domesticate” the Dog.  Instead, approximately 12,000 years ago, Man and the Wolf evolved simultaneously into a partnership in which Dog (the evolved Wolf) took on the responsibility of guarding over Man, and Man accepted the responsibility for the care and feeding of Dog.  At the same time — archeological records show — Man’s brain mass decreased by about 10% (because he didn’t have to guard the fort at night) and Dog’s brain mass decreased by about 20% (because he didn’t have to scavenge for food).  It’s a fascinating story, well told.  It truly explains the warm psychological bond between Man and Dog.

What’s in a Dog’s Mind?

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Alexandra Horowitz, author of “Inside of a Dog: What Dogs See, Smell and Know,” describes her research on “dog cognition.”  Hear Alexandra’s extremely interesting insights into what life is like for a dog.  Anyone who has tried to write from a dog’s point of view, for example, has had to deal with this.  An interesting insight:  That lick on the face you get from your dog when you return home may not be an expression of friendliness; it may be checking to see if you found food on today’s hunt!

My Dog Took Me For A Walk

Monday, October 12th, 2009

This weekend, at Lake Arrowhead, Callie’s bathroom breaks have been pretty short and sweet. Which is fine with me, because I’m still wearing summer shorts, and there is a late-summer, early autumn chill in the air.

This morning, Callie and I went outdoors just before sunrise. We were joined by a barn owl and his loud “whoo whoos.”  And the sky was an uncharacteristic bright orange and salmon color as some weather is moving in.

As has been her habit these last few days, Callie made quick work of her bathroom business. I started to walk back to our house, but Callie tugged hard on her leash and I got the message — “I really want to go for a little walk.”

Ever since Ted Kerasote (“Merle’s Door”) was a guest on the “My Doggie Says…” show, I have let Callie have her way in these situations.  Ted says, “I spend ten or fifteen minutes ‘reading the news’ every morning, why shouldn’t Merle get to ‘read the news?’   After all, that’s what a dog is doing when it sniffs every odor on its path.”

“Those little dachaunds peed here yesterday.”   “A coyoote walked by here earlier this morning.”  “A squirrel has been chewing on this pine cone.”  “Hmmm, someone spilled some hot chocolate by the motor home.”

So, I let Callie “read the news” this morning, and I could tell she appreciated it. When she was ready, she headed for home and said, “Thanks, Fred, it was a pretty good news day.”

Help Your Dog Live a Happier, Healthier Life

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Kim Bloomer, VND, co-author of “Whole Health for Happy Dogs: A natural health handbook for dogs and their owners,” describes a holistic approach to keeping your dog healthy.

“As a dog’s caregiver, it is important to understand that the decisions made from puppyhood on affect the rest of a dog’s life.  To make these important decisions dog owners need to clearly understand the traditional as well as non-traditional approach to dog care.  With all the advances in pet nutrition and veterinary medicine, dogs should be healthier and living longer.”
