Dr. Aubrey Fine is a native of Montreal, Canada. He received his graduate degree from University of Cincinnati in 1982. Dr. Fine opened his practice in Claremont in 1987. His practice specializes in treating children with ADHD, learning disabilities, developmental disorders and parent child relations.

Dr. Fine has also been an active faculty member at California State Polytechnic University since Fall of 1981. His leadership among faculty and teaching excellence earned him the prestigious Wang Award in 2001, given to a distinguished professor within the California State University system, in this instance for exceptional commitment, dedication, and exemplary contributions within the areas of education and applied sciences. He was also awarded the Educator of the Year in 1990, from the Learning Disability Association of CA. He just was awarded the 2006 CA Poly Faculty Award for Community Engagement. He is the author of several books including the Therapist’s Guide to Learning and Attention Disorders as well as the Handbook on Animal Assisted Therapy.

When Did Man and Dog First Form Their Partnership?

Jonathan Franklin, author of “The Wolf in the Parlor,” has re-written the narrative about the long-time relationship between Man and Dog. Conventional wisdom has Man domesticating the Dog somewhere around 6,000 years ago. But Jon Franklin, through extensive research, has shown that Man didn’t really “domesticate” the Dog. Instead, approximately 12,000 years ago, Man and the Wolf evolved simultaneously into a partnership in which Dog (the evolved Wolf) took on the responsibility of guarding over Man, and Man accepted the responsibility for the care and feeding of Dog. At the same time — archeological records show — Man’s brain mass decreased by about 10% (because he didn’t have to guard the fort at night) and Dog’s brain mass decreased by about 20% (because he didn’t have to scavenge for food). It’s a fascinating story, well told. It truly explains the warm psychological bond between Man and Dog.

The Golden Retriever Club of Greater Los Angeles Rescue (GRCGLAR) has a wonderful project for rescuing dogs from the streets of Taiwan. Barbara Davis, assembled part of the team for this edition of the “My Doggie Says… Show. Ira Lawson heads up the Welcome Waggin Committee and is the first to greet the dogs when they arrive at LAX. David Perry is the Project Taiwan liason. Alan Heppel adopted one of the dogs from Taiwan — Tucker was found in an alleyway tied to a pole. Debra Wild adopted her Golden Retriever, “Arthur Douglas McMurray Bach.”
